The Burning Question Which is better - A Gas or Wood/charcoal Spitbraai Allan Whittaker, a director of Egoli Events has the following advice to offer on Spit braais for hire Soweto.

It is hard to beat the ambience of a spit braai experience. They are fun, cost effective for a lot of people and easy to do. You to can be a Spit braai Guru so what are you waiting for. Make your next entertainment function a spit braai.

The purists say it is all in the taste of a wood spitbraai. Wood flavors your food better.This is due to the guaiacol aroma compound that is released when wood is burnt giving it a spicy, smokey and some even say a ‘bacon’ type of flavor especially when using hard woods, such as sekkelbos and kameeldoring. You are not going to get that smokey flavour with gas all though some people recommend adding smoke chips. Not that I have ever tried them.

For convenience gas wins hands down, it is quicker to start up, no fire and coals just switch on the gas and light up. Not to mention as well as cooking your meat quicker because the spit enclosure acts like an oven as well.

When it comes to cleaning a charcoal braai is easier just tip out the old charcoal and give it a brush whereas a gas spitbraai needs some elbow grease, hot water and soap to get rid of all that fat.

When it comes to cooking vegetables in the spit the enclosed gas spitbraai wins hands down as it acts like an oven. Whereas most wood spit braais do not even have a drip tray. The exception are the side burner wood spits which have an open stainless steel drip dray but cooking time is much slower. Do not forget to parboil your vegetables otherwise it will take forever to cook them.

Wood and charcoal burns hotter. A hotter fire is way better for your red meats as it allows for a crisp outside and a red/pink inside without overcooking the meat. Some people say most gas spitbraai’s do not get hot enough to really get the required heat. In my experience this is not so especially with a 2 burner gas spit.

The cost factor. Wood is definately the cheapest 3 bags cost around R25-45, charcoal 3 bags will cost around R50 for a 4-5kg bag (R150) , whilst you should only use 3-4 kg of gas which costs approximately R100 to R150.

Safety: both are reasonably safe if you use some common sense. Gas is pretty safe as long as you obey the basic rules, ensure all connections are tight, switch off the gas at the cylinder when not in use and light it with a long nozzle gas lighter. Wood is also pretty safe, don't let hot coals fall on the ground and keep flammable items away from the fire.
